Aufsatzsammlung „Die Wirtschaftsethik der Weltreligionen“ von 1916 bis 1918 das
Nachfolgewerk seiner Protestantismusstudien „Die protestantische Ethik und der
Geist des Kapitalismus“ und „Die protestantischen Sekten und der Geist des
Kapitalismus“. In „Die Wirtschaftsethik der Weltreligionen“ beschäftigte er sich neben
Konfuzianismus und Taoismus, dem antiken Judentum und den Pharisäern auch mit
Hinduismus und Buddhismus. Zu den beiden Letzteren verfasste er die Aufsätze
„Das hinduistische soziale System“, „Die orthodoxen und heterodoxen Heilslehren
der indischen Intellektuellen“ und „Die asiatische Sekten- und Heilandsreligiosität“.
In der vorliegenden Arbeit beschäftige ich mich maßgeblich mit „Das
hinduistische soziale System“, um mich mit Webers Analysen zum indischen
Kastensystem zu befassen. Eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Wirtschaftsethik des
Hinduismus in Gänze beanspruche ich mit dieser Arbeit allerdings nicht, da dies
einerseits den Rahmen einer einfachen Hausarbeit sprengen würde. Andererseits
liefe es wohl auf eine schlichte Zusammenfassung von Webers Werk „Hinduismus
und Buddhismus“ hinaus. Darüber hinaus liegt mir aber an, den Gehalt von Webers
Analysen (zumindest im Ansatz) auf ihre Aktualität hin zu überprüfen. Eine gewisse
Aktualität sei ihr immerhin von vornherein unterstellt, denn schließlich zählen die
Aufsätze immer noch zu den Standardwerken für alle Indieninteressierten, nicht nur
aus dem Bereich der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften. Daher hoffe ich sehr,
dass obwohl Weber seine Hinduismusstudie in den Jahren von 1917 bis 1918
verfasste, mir dieser „historische Spreizschritt“ von mehr als neunzig Jahren gelingt.
